What is the Tai Sui?

The Tai Sui (太岁) is the "General of the Year" — a celestial officer associated with the year’s reigning sign. Tradition holds that signs in certain relations to the reigning sign "offend" the Tai Sui (犯太岁): presiding over it in your own year, clashing directly across the wheel, or sitting in a punishment, harm, or break relation with it.

Offending the Tai Sui is read as a year of turbulence and testing rather than doom — the counsel is caution, steadiness, and the classic folk remedies: wear red gifted by someone who loves you, visit a temple early in the year, take fewer wild risks.

Ben Ming Nian — your own year returns

Every twelve years, the wheel comes back to your sign: your Ben Ming Nian (本命年). Counter-intuitively, tradition marks your own year as a tested one — you "preside over" the Tai Sui, and the spotlight brings scrutiny along with opportunity. Hence the red underwear, red bracelets, and red cords sold every New Year: red wards the year’s sharp edges.

2026 · Year of the Fire Horse

From February 17, 2026 to February 5, 2027 the wheel belongs to the Fire Horse — the sexagenary year Bingwu, last seen in 1966 and famous enough to move birth rates. Every sign’s 2026 reading below derives from two traditional relations: how it sits with the year’s Horse, and how its fixed element meets the year’s Fire.
